Notice:
This site has successfully transitioned the image data source from GOES-16 to
GOES-19. There are some remaining anomalies in the production of mesoscale
geocolor images which are being investigated. Everything else should be operating
as expected. Please contact:
NESDIS.STAR.webmaster@noaa.gov if you have any questions.

1.6 µm - Snow/Ice Band - 1 km resolution - During the day band 5 can be used to differentiate ice clouds and snow (relatively dark) from liquid water clouds (relatively bright), such as fog and stratus. It can also detect very hot fires both day and night.
Band 5 is a visible channel and is therefore black during nighttime hours.
